Yea, I'm back for some reason.

Some people who stumbled upon my blog for Gosh-knows-why says that my blog is gooood. It's nice... but I always believed that with Facebook and Twitter and stuff, people want information as fast, as brief and as sweet as possible, and that spelled the wake of blogging...

BUT! I refuse to believe so now. Blogging is NEVER dead. AND I for one shall not rest. Starting 7th September, I shall once again re-awaken my dead drib! AGAIN!

and as for the previous post, yea i was supposed to keep it updated throughout the year, but I've been enjoying life to its maximum for SO long and SO much i barely have the time or energy to remember every little detail and write it down... so there ya go.

Anyway, stay tuned!

The Little Things that make me Happy in 2011

2011 for me so far has been so amazing...!

But it's not because big significant things happened...

It's because of the little things that make my day... every day.

I am always one who appreciates the little things in life... Makes life better doesn't it?

But I kinda lost track of that for 2010, maybe because too many awful things happened to shadow out the good stuff in life...

So I have decided, here on this post, to list down the little things that has made my 2011 such a sweet year so far.. and I'll update it throughout the year to remind myself how great life is, how awesome the world just is...

Making spontaneous on-the-spot decisions without thinking (eg: the New Year Eve steamboat~)
a bar of Kit-Kat.. (or two.. or three.. or a whole packet ^^)
starry starry nights
waking up to a rainy morning with no plans ahead (espcially opening my eyes to one of my big-eyed innocent looking Dooodolls)

a hot cup of BOH on a cold windy day
looking out the balcony and seeing clear skies and no haze to block the awesome KL skyline (especially at night)
watching "The Hurt Locker" and spotting a Proton Wira!
washing laundry in the morning and getting them dry by afternoon (glorious Malaysian sunshine~)
Realising the boxes for "Dooodolls Baby" can double as my mobile phone stand (aww~)
Facebook has the language "Malaysian".. nice..
Using the Internet on the balcony while enjoying the weather
Get to eat homemade 糖水! (Thanks Geogy!)

A Story about a Big Blue Whale

Hold out your hands perpendicular in front of you, roughly bigger than the width of your shoulders...

Now hold them out one on top of another, roughly the size of a 1.5 liter mineral water bottle apart...

I used to have a dark blue plush (soft toy) blue whale that is THIS size.

When I was just a little infant, my mom gave me this big blue whale...

and as far as I can remember, I've had this big blue whale by my side all my life.

It was dark blue, while the bottom side of it was white...

it had two beady black eyes on either side of its head, and wears a tiny overly-undersized cap with a capital letter 'N' on it...

It had two big fins on either side of its body, and a big tail laying flat on the back...

I remember, as a child, I used to hug it around everywhere I go, or drag it along as I was walking around...

Even when I got older, it was always on my bed, laying patiently next to my pillow awaiting to welcome me to bed every night.

Sometimes, when it gets in the way, I would keep it safely tucked in a cupboard...

...but I could never last a week without it. I would still go and grab it and lay it on my bed...

I've had this big little whale for 16 years...

It's been my companion through everything I've been through...

It's brought me comfort whenever I needed it...

It's always been there for me...

It was my childhood.

and during 2006, through the flurry and confusion of moving from one house to another...

It's gone.

and at first, for a few years, I did not feel anything...

But now, 2010. After moving to KL, I'm not sure why, I started to think about it...

Maybe it's because 2010 has been the roughest year of my life, and I needed a true companion to get me through it all...

Yes, I have an orange Dooodoll (Sunny Twin) who I claim is my best friend through thick and thin...

but there's a history between me and that Blue Whale...

And as 2010 got crappier and crappier, I started to miss it more and more...

I started to think about it even more when I was in Baleno Sunway Pyramid...

when I saw this...

It is in the wrong shade of blue...

it doesn't have a cap...

It's tail goes up, not flat...

and it's small....

other than that, it is the EXACT replica of my big blue whale.....

and memories came flushing back into my brain...

Big Blue Whale... I miss you...

This Is How A Heart Breaks

Randomly came across this song by Rob Thomas.. "This is How a Heart Breaks"...

The title is so inapt. The whole song doesn't mention anything about how it is to have a heart break!!

So here I will attempt to describe how it feels like to have your heart broken.

First. Let's imagine a scenario...

You fall deeply in love with someone...

That person says that he/she loves you too...

You two get really close to each other...

You have been acting almost like a couple even though you're not official.

You have a good feeling about where this is going.

Chances are high, so are hopes...

Everything is going well...

until...

...that person says that he/she chose to be with another person.

The first reaction when getting that piece of information? Stunned silenced. Like in the picture above... at that point, not wanting to sound like a loser, or a jerk, of an idiot, the natural reaction would be... "oh.. good for you.. congrats.."

But then, your thoughts gather back... your brain processes what you just heard,and you realize... it's not okay... at that point your mind is still blank, and all you can think about is.....

...crying. and once you start, you can't stop.... tears flood out the whole night... not just flowing out of your eye sockets.. but full on howling out in pain... up to the point where you find it hard to even catch your breath... let alone talk...

You can't let the people around you see what's happened... you can't show weakness.. so you have to wait till nobody is around.. example, locked inside the room... when everyone is asleep...

or out alone on the balcony where nobody can hear you... you try to look in your phone for a confidant to talk to, but you find out there's nobody there for you in your time of need... so all you can do is cry you eyes out until you eventually fall asleep, if you can...

That's not the hardest part. The hardest part is what comes after that...

For example, the first time you meet him/her after what has happened..

Every time you look at that person, your heart feels sad.. no.. anger hasn't set in yet.. you feel sorry for yourself.. you look at him/her and deep down you think "he/she is so close to me yet so far.. He/She is something that I will never get"...

then.. you feel like crying again.. but you can't! you cannot show signs of weakness. you want to let him/her know that you are okay... so you hold it all inside... and when you finally get some time to yourself, once again it's an eruption of tears. You can't control yourself as you sob helplessly in your own little corner of the world.. your heart feels like it's been pierced, stabbed, trampled on, chewed up and spit out...

and then... comes the love songs...

sweet romantic love songs that you used to think you could relate to, are now the ones that mock you and laugh in your face...

sad songs that you never really could feel, are now the ones that touch your heart... making you cry every time you hear them because that's what you are going through...

angry songs that you never even bothered about are the ones that you will soon sing all the time because that will soon be what you feel when self pity dies out...

worst still.. songs that mean something to you.. such as the song you first danced to.. the first song you sang together.. the first song you kissed together... are the ones that now mean NOTHING to you... just like all the things that you done for that person... you used to think that they mean the world, and is as important as your own life.. but now they mean nothing, because that person doesn't feel it means anything to them...

and on all occasions above... you cry again...

speaking of memories...

This is the hardest part.. at least I think it is...

Memories change... Sweet memories that you used to adore and cherish are now the memories that haunt you...

Memories that you thought you would remember forever for the rest of your life are still there, but instead of making you smile, they make you cry...

Memorable locations such as your first date, your first kiss, your first movie... are now places that you will hate most... because whenever you are there... they remind you of what it should be now and what could have been...

they remind you that it's over....

and you cry again...

days..weeks..months pass.. but you will still find it hard to get over it..

"WHY" is the only word in your head.

"Why if he/she loves me did he/she choose someone else?"
"Why is he/she doing this to me?"
"Why does he/she choose to hurt me so bad?"
"Why if he/she wants someone else did he/she lead me to believe I was the one?"

but you can never ask that person these questions.

you want to remain friends. you want him/her to think you're okay and move on, even though inside it hurts like hell just even thinking of his/her name...

Alcohol slowly becomes your best friend. It doesn't cure your heart, but it does help in numbing it and helps in hiding the pain...

you drink everyday hoping that one day, it would drown out the memories..

but still you end up crying yourself to sleep every night...

Crying has become your past-time...

by now your eyes hurt so bad and you're dried up from all the crying.

Isn't it unfair? Your heart hurts, but it's your eyes that take the pain...

well this is life. this is love. Love is unfair. Love is never fair.

As one door closes...

Well, here we are...

at the actual end of my first semester here in TAR College KL campus...

right now I'm only 2 hours away from the last paper, 5 hours 15 minutes from completing everything, and around 7 hours away from my holidays in Penang...

...but I can't help feeling like the end of this semester...

...would also mark the end of many other things in my life...

People say "as one door closes, another opens..."

People say "as one chapter comes to an end, the other begins..."

even though this semester has been somewhat horrible to me... so what?

what if I don't want to close the door? what if I don't want to end this chapter?

It's hard to enjoy something with the limited time you have left with it, knowing very well that it will soon come to an end...

I'm sorry about my behaviour lately...

I've been acting strangely.. weirdly..

I don't know why and I can't explain it myself..

But I haven't been myself lately..

(to those who need to ask, NO this has nothing to do with LOVE)

My mood has been all over the place..

but it's been spending a heck lot of time in the 'bad' corner..

for no reason, I get angry.. get mad.. get frustrated.. about what? I have no clue..

What's even worse, I've been feeling very weak and tired all the time lately...

...even though I'm not sick!

I can hardly gather enough energy to stay awake..

I've tried exercises..

I've tried coffee..

I've tried Red Bull..

I've even resorted to slapping myself constantly (true story)..

but it does not work.

Should I see a doctor about this? I've never been like this before.. it's very abnormal...

Once again.. Sorry to my family members (especially mom) and sorry to all my friends..

I've made you worry unnecessarily, I may have even hurt you...

But believe me when I say I DON'T MEAN TO!!!

Life's Little Instructions

I found this little post on http://9gag.com and i found it interesting and possibly true!

These are 'a few' instructions you can follow everyday in life to make your life and the life of people around you just a little bit better... no matter how terrible it may be...

Let's see which of these do i follow or have followed before in my life:

Sing in the shower (I do it all the time!)
Treat everyone you meet like you want to be treated (hey, it's my life's philosophy/motto)
Watch a sunrise at least once a year (check!)
Leave the toilet seat in the down position (err... i do leave it down in my mom's toilet)
Never refuse homemade brownies (I never! if only I were offered homemade brownies..)
Strive for excellence, not perfection (this is a good one! I'll follow it now onwards)
Plant a tree on your birthday (never done this before...yet!)
Learn three clean jokes (I have tons!)
Return borrowed vehicles with the gas tank full (I haven't borrowed vehicles before besides bicycles)
Compliment three people every day (I will!)
Never waste an opportunity to tell someone you love them (erm.. okay..)
Leave everything a little better than you found it (not everything but I do leave SOME things better than I found it)
Keep it simple (of course!)
Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures (that's me!)
Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know (I'm the most positive and enthusiastic person to many people! Muahaha!)
Floss your teeth (I done it before...)
Ask for a raise when you feel you've earned it (I've asked for increase in marks before)
Be forgiving of yourself and others (I AM!! maybe a little too much)
Over-tip breakfast waitresses (never done that before)
Say "Thank You" a lot (yup!)
Say "Please" a lot (check!)
Avoid negative people (that's what my dad keeps telling me!)
Buy whatever kids are selling on card tables in front yards (never seen this in Malaysia)
Wear polished shoes (did that in National Service! haha)
Remember other people's birthdays (I DO!!!)
Commit yourself to constant improvement (for sure!)
Carry jumper cables in your trunk (I don't...)
Have a firm handshake (I don't know about that.. any comments?)
Send lots of Valentine cards. Sign them "Someone who thinks you're terrific" (next February 14!)
Look people in the eye (its the first thing i always notice about someone)
Be the first to say "Hello" ( I always am)
Use the good silver (I never had good silver)
Return all things you borrow (well duh)
Make new friends but cherish the old ones (friendship is the most important to me)
Keep secrets (explain: as in.. to protect people from hurt.. not to hide feelings.. I know.. I've been there)
Sing in a choir (I was an invaluable member of a choir)
Plant flowers every spring (there's no SPRING in Malaysia)
Have a dog (I want to too)
Always accept an outstretched hand (I always do.. I think)
Stop blaming others (HAHAHAHAHA okayy)
Take responsibility for every area of your life (yup!)
Wave at kids on school buses (huh?!?)
Be there when people need you (I try my best!)
Feed a stranger's expired parking meter (errmm..)
Don't expect life to be fair (I already don't. Experience has told me that)
Never underestimate the power of love (I don't know)
Drink champagne for no reason at all (yea.. seldom but yea)
Live your life as an exclamation, not an explanation (I should learn from this. I keep explaining myself.)
Don't be afraid to say, "I made a mistake" (I'm not)
Don't be afraid to say, "I don't know" (certainly not)
Compliment even small improvements (yup)
Keep your promises no matter what (I do, people don't)
Marry only for love (I shall!)
Rekindle old friendships (I do it often)
Count your blessings (yea~)
Call your mother ("hello? mommy?")

HEY! I don't hate 2010 so much anymore!

Yea.. after pretty much a lousy first four months, where almost nothing is going right, something good happened!

(I knew if i hit rock bottom, there's no where else to go but up..problem is I'm not at rock bottom yet.. so based on Spongebob's map, I'm in Bikini Bottom..)

Just a re-cap of why 2010 has been terrible for me:

I started the year without any New Year celebration..of any sort...
endured a mentally and physically disorientating 5 hour flight in economy class on the 2nd day of the year (note to self: don't take economy class for long distance flights)
my results for 5th sem (aka Y2S2) were WAY below my expectations...
in March, my mood was all over the place.. like I had a month long PMS...
American Idol sucks
I'll be leaving Penang
etc

(*ps: the absolute worst one is no.5)

but now, i can finally add something to the "positive" side of my somewhat unbalanced list.

I finally got what I set out to do when my diplomas began.. I scored a 4-flat...

When i saw my results, the feeling was amazing! Undeniable elation as my mind slowly wraps around the fact that I have achieved what I set out to do 2 years ago.. Indescribable was the feeling of pride.. honour.. happiness.. satisfaction.. accomplishment..

then about 5 minutes later, it's all gone. My mind went from "OMG WOW!" to "so what?" immediately... as everything settles in, there's a feeling of "errm... so what now? nothing's gonna happen, why am I so happy?"

What is the point of achieving something if your brain does not know how to appreciate it?

Also, in management subjects, I've always learnt that to motivate someone, something must be given as a 'reward' in order to drive that person to achieve the desired results..

In this case.. so I've achieved 4 flat.. now what?

Mr Amos will congratulate me in front of a press conference?

The Prime Minister wants to have a forum with me.. live telecast?

I'll have my own parade down Merdeka Square?

Nobel Prize?

You know what? I'm nit-picking.. so I don't get a million-dollar reward.. who cares?

The satisfaction of FINALLY getting a 4-flat is amazing...

The Good Ones are either Married or Gay

Watched "Confessions of a Shoppaholic" today...

I know, it's so yesterday.. but i made it a point to read the books before i watch the movie..

And that got me thinking........

Often, when men go shopping with women...

In this case, shoe shopping.....

Most of the time you'll see the men sitting on the couches provided while women slowly go through the wide array of shoes on display...

Trying on different styles, different sizes of each style, and then different colour of each style..

(I like to refer to the resting couches in the shoe department as the "Men's Section".. That's where you'll most likely see men.. Gurney Plaza's new and improved Parkson has great "men's sections")

At which point you'll see the MEN (if friendly) start talking to each other...

Man 1: "With the wife?"

Man 2: "Girlfriend."

Man 1: "Ugh.. Some people have all the luck.."

Man 2: "How so?"

Man 1: "You're not obligated to pay for those."

Man 2: "That's in THEORY. But at least I'm not that man over there *points*"

Man 1: "What's wrong with him?"

Man 2: "He's with his wife to be.. He proposed."

Man 1: "May his credit card rest in piece.. Or pieces if it's busted."

Man 2: "I know. What is it with women and shoes?"

THERE! That sentence.. "What is it with women and shoes?"

I've heard it in movies...

I've read it in books...

I've even had it coming at me in real life...

But it just doesn't apply to women alone...anymore..does it?

(classically the reply would be...from the woman, of course... "Ugh, I don't know, what's with men and cars?".. but that doesn't apply either right?)

Really.. I've seen guys be SO petty when it comes to choosing shoes..or any type of clothing for that matter....

But i'm not going into this topic.. HA! i'll offend so many of my close friends....

SPEAKING of 'sayings' that don't apply...

What's with "the good ones are either married or gay"?

I mean.. come on! i know many good single straight guys out there.....

Just because i'm not married and not gay.. doesn't mean i'm not good!

(i say i THINK because i'm not sure if i have the perseverance for that)

So far, 2010 sucks for me.... so far...

What's so great about the big "two-oh-one-oh"..?

ESPECIALLY the month of March.

Nothing was right during March. Everything i planned to do goes down the drain, everything i DON'T want happen comes by the bucket loads (or truck loads, whichever u may prefer).. and for some reason i can't explain (not quoting Coldplay's song), my mood the whole month was all F*toot*ed up!

April was a bit bit better, although i still had to face exams, as well as the unavoidable separation from my dear dear machine gunners (that's M16, my class, if you didn't get it), plus rushing to and fro between KL and Penang to settle my accommodations there....

Then comes May.. the "Merry Month of May"... Nothing "MERRY" about it as far as i can tell...

...because i'll be celebrating my birthday in KL for the first time.. come to think of it, it'll be the first time i'm celebrating it outside lovely Penang..

..and that's sad...

Don't get me wrong, i don't actually mind that i'll be celebrating it far far far away from most of the people i love..

(family, close friends, etc)<-----don't really understand what the etc is for

(for those who has the chance to celebrate with me in KL, i said "MOST" of the people i love)

the absolute WORST thing about it is..... well.....

15th move to KL

16th birthday

"OLD" is getting someone's attention and then forgetting what you have to say..

(happens to me all the time)

"OLD" is when you can't sleep at night after drinking a cup of coffee..

(happening to me recently, strangely not last night though)

"OLD" is when a little kid looks at you and calls you "uncle" instead of "koko"..

(never happened to me yet thanks to my baby-ish face)

"OLD" is when you don't have the "-teen" in your age anymore..

(luckily I'm only turning twenteen this year)

The absolute worst one is.... (and this one just happened to me about 5 minutes ago)..

"OLD" is when you put down your phone, then 5 seconds later turn back to get it, but can't remember where you put it..

THAT IS OLD!!

seriously! I read a text message on my phone.. put it down to find something..

when i found that something, i turned around to get my phone and reply, and i seriously DON'T REMEMBER WHERE IT WAS!!

spent 5 whole minutes looking for it..

worst part was, it was in silent mode....

Chri[Z]to-Battle™ (Camera Phone vs Digital Camera)

During the launch of the Nokia N86, the Product Marketing Manager of Nokia Singapore/Malaysia Mr Glen Cha said that “…users of the Nokia N86 no longer have to bring a digital camera wherever they go…”

In the past I would simply discard that as just another desperate marketing attempt, as camera-phone cameras were never as good as digicams, primarily because of the difference in technology.

However, with the megapixel count of camera-phones catching up, and with the latest digicam technology included into camera-phones (especially the ones included in the N86, i.e. wide angle lens, face recognition, variable aperture…), this claim finally seems possible…

I have been wondering how the N86 would stack up to the T20, and since my last post, people have been asking me the same question.

So here I am, putting Mr Glen Cha’s claim to the test. Up against the 8MP N86, is the equally megapixel-ed Sony CyberShot DSC-T20, although I admit this camera is quite old.

So can the mighty (as proven) Nokia N86 really de-throne the Sony Cybershot DSC-T20? Can camera-phones really be as good as a digital camera? Should point-and-shoot digicam makers be worried?

I’ll be testing these cameras in various types of places and conditions that they are expected to be used in.

Also, I’ll be testing the “point-and-shoot-ability” of the cameras. These cameras are expected to take special moments in a nick of a second, so I’ll see how these cameras handle the sweep out of the pocket to take instant photos. This means all the photos taken below are “first shot” photos, and I didn’t allow second chances.

Let the battle begin. *Ding Ding*

Round 1: Design/Packaging

Let’s start with the boring stuff.

Digital cameras should be compact and portable so that users can take them around and snap at things they like.

Ditto mobile phones.

Both pass the test, but the mobile phone has an advantage: users do not need to bring two separate devices to stay in touch and to take photos.

The N86 measures 103 x 51 x 17 (mm), weighing 149g, while the T20 measures 90 x 56 x 23 (mm), weighing 197g. This means both devices are about the same size, but the T20 weighs more significantly. This seems even more amazingly amazing if you take into account the great number of features the N86 has that the T20 doesn’t.

The screens for the N86 and T20 are quite equally matched, at 2.6 inch and 2.5 inch respectively. This means the difference is invisible to the naked eye. But what isn’t invisible is the quality of the screen. The N86 uses an AMOLED screen, which looks much MUCH better than the T20’s humble LCD screen, as shown in the photo above (right side).

Both have the camera controls on the same side, similarly the location of the flash and lens. They differ in the lens cover. Both act as switches to activate the camera (T20 starts up significantly faster, because it runs less functions than the N86), but while the N86’s only cover the lens, the T20’s cover the lens, the flash, the auto-focus light, and a whole bunch of nothing. Speaking of flash, the N86 only has dual-LED while the T20 has a Xenon flash. This might be a problem for the N86.

Round 2: Outdoor Photos

Now the serious part.

N86 on the left, T20 on the right.

Bright light, distant object:

Both cameras do well here. Both were able to produce sharp images, both handled the insane Malaysian sunlight well, and both produced incredibly true to life colours. N86’s wide-angle lens took more of the scenery though. Tie.

N86 – 1 ; T20 – 1

Bright light, closer object:

A chose to take photos of grass to test the ‘green’ sensor of the cameras, something which seems to be hard for cameras. In this case, the N86 takes a slight triumph. The photos taken are slightly sharper, and although the colour of green is a bit ‘over-green’, but it’s still closer to the real thing than the surprisingly dull green that the T20 managed.

N86 – 2 ; T20 – 1

Shady, close-up:

Both photos are equally sharp, and both handled the bright/dark balance well. The N86 was able to capture the yellow slightly better, but it turned out a tad artificial, so strictly, I couldn’t count it as an advantage. Tie.

N86 – 3 ; T20 – 2

Overcast (cloudy), scenery:

Somehow the T20’s photo was a bit overexposed and the colours are dull. From the above photo it is obvious that the N86 performed much better. Someone claimed that the N86 over-saturated the colours, but based on my eyes, the colours were spot on to the real thing.

N86 – 4 ; T20 – 2

Overcast, sky:

Both cameras performed equally well here. Tie.

N86 – 5 ; T20 – 3

Overcast, objects:

Both cameras produced equally sharp images, but once again the T20’s image was somewhat over-exposed, making the top surfaces of the car nothing but bright spots. N86’s photo is more pleasing to the eye, and in scenes like this, you can really tell the difference the wide-angle lens makes.

N86 – 6 ; T20 – 3

Zoom:

With a 3x optical zoom, the T20 surely has an advantage over the N86, which is handicapped by only having digital zoom. And it shows. (Please enlarge). The N86, when zoomed in to extreme, looks a tiny bit like an oil painting, while the T20 maintains the sharpness of the image. But mind you, it only looks a tiny TINY bit like a painting, because the N86 has a new technology called “real digital zoom”, which brings the standard much closer to optical zoom compared to other digital zooms.

N86 – 6 ; T20 – 4

Shaded area, natural lighting:

Both images are equally good once again. Although the N86’s photo gets the colour of the floor closer to the real thing, the difference is minimal to me, and hardly qualifies the N86 a ‘win’ over the T20. Tie.

N86 – 7 ; T20 – 5

Shaded area, natural lighting, close-up:

Somehow, the face-detection of both cameras kicked-in for this shot. The N86’s focused on the purple-shirt monk on the last row, while the T20 focused on the green-shirt monk on the second row (only the monks’ faces were recognized as a ‘face’ to both cameras). Even so, only the N86 managed to produce a sharp image of what it was focused on, with the T20’s photo appearing blurry overall. Also, the purple on the monk turned out slightly pink on the T20’s photo.

N86 – 8 ; T20 – 5

Natural lighting, forced flash:

Surprisingly, both cameras produced so-so images. The N86’s photo turned out over-exposed, while the T20 was unable to focus well on the object. The T20’s Xenon flash advantage was not apparent on this photo. Tie. Equally disappointing. Remember, I’m testing “point-and-shoot-ability”. No re-takes.

N86 – 9 ; T20 – 6

Round 3: Indoor Photos

Natural lighting:

The T-20 produced a mildly sharper image, while the N86 managed more natural colours. Tie.

N86 – 10 ; T20 – 7

Artificial lighting, Bright:

Both cameras were not set on micro mode. Both produced very clear images, but for the first time, the T20’s colour were more to the real situation.

N86 – 10 ; T20 – 8

Artificial Lighting, close-up:

This one is a pure tie. Hardly any difference.

N86 – 11 ; T20 – 9

Artificial lighting, soft:

Once again, the T20 triumphs here, however the red on the “Lovely Lace” was closer to the real thing on the N86. The T20 over-saturated the red. Still, cannot deny the T20 a win here.

N86 – 11 ; T20 – 10

Artificial lighting, soft, close-up:

While the N86 produced a sharper image, people would be more pleased by the T20’s photo with better image.

Dim lighting, bright objects:

The only difference here is the amount of scene each cameras take, and its not much of a difference either. Tie.

N86 – 12 ; T20 – 12

Dark, flashing lights, no flash:

Both images came out a bit blur, as the constant flashing of lights might have confused the auto-focus. However, if you look at the lit up sign on the left of “Daytona USA”, you will notice over-exposure by the T20. The T20 over-saturates the red again.

N86 – 13 ; T20 – 12

Dark, flashing lights, flash:

With the flash on, both produced sharper images. The N86’s dual-LED flash was sufficient to light up the objects, but overall the photo was ‘milky’. The T20’s Xenon flash triumphs here, but once again the red is too red.

Open space, natural lighting:

Too close to call. Tie.

N86 – 14 ; T20 – 14

Open space, bright natural light:

The main challenge for the cameras here is to see if they can capture the colour of the main focus (i.e. the walls and corridors) rather than the influencing colours (i.e. light from the skylight). N86 could easily get the colour of the walls right, while the T20 was hugely affected by the sunlight from the skylight, turning blue-ish. N86 takes major win.

N86 – 15 ; T20 – 14

Open space, less bright natural light:

I figured if the sunlight affected the T20, what would happen if there was less sunlight. The colour the T20 got was slightly improved from the previous one, but still no match for the N86.

Skylight, direct sunlight:

No questions about it. N86 wins.

N86 – 17 ; T20 – 14

Dark, with distant light, no flash:

The N86’s aperture works very well here, opening up to let more light in, resulting in a brighter room.

N86 – 18 ; T20 – 14

Dark, with distant light, flash:

T20’s Xenon flash once again showing the N86 what flashes are all about, with a greatly brighter photo (but less sharp somehow). The N86’s dual-LED flash is weaker, but mated to the aperture, the photo is still acceptable. Victory to the T20 though.

Dark, close-up:

Both produced different photos, both are nice. I couldn’t tell which photo got the closer colour to the real thing because the corridor was really dark.

N86 – 20 ; T20 – 16

Bright, fluorescent light:

The N86’s image is brighter, but the colours (on the tip of the highlighters) were a little too bright. The T20 manage a more realistic saturation.

N86 – 20 ; T20 – 17

Pure darkness:

This photo was taken in pure 100% darkness in the middle of the night. The N86 surprised me with a photo that enables you to see everything, not like some phones with LED flashes that only light up the centre. But however good it may be, the Xenon flash of the T20 helped notch it into victory with a better photo. The N86 is not far behind though, proving that LED flashes has come a long way.

Slim victory for the N86.

I set out to try and prove that camera phones are as good as digital cameras, and I end up seeing that camera phones are not only ‘as good’, but in certain cases, they are better.

Even if the score was tied, or if the N86 lost by one or two points, victory still goes to the camera phone, for two simple reasons:

There are tons more functions; and
You do not have to bring two separate devices everywhere you go

Chri[Z]to-Battle™ (N86 vs W995)

Nokia and Sony Ericsson have always been in hot battle, at least in our region (Malaysia). It’s been going on for a very long time, from the memory capacity war, to the megapixel fight. In a way it is a good thing, as it ensures that they keep their standards up. On the downside though, sometimes they get too caught up with what each other are doing, they end up producing similar products that are only mildly differentiated.

Now, the battle heats up even more as Nokia and Sony Ericsson introduced slider-products that I think are the closest to each other ever. Both were announced in February 2009, and both launched within 1 month of each other during mid-2009 (June and May respectively).

They are the Nokia N86 8MP and the Sony Ericsson W995.

I recently had the chance to use both these mobile phones, and thought it would be interesting to do a comparison since they are “arch rivals”.

As you can see, the specs of both phones are incredibly close. What’s even more similar is the fact that both these phones have the same size screen (2.6inch, 320 x 240), both provide the same types of connectivity (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSPDA, HSCSD, WLAN, GPS, Bluetooth etc), both have accelerometer/motion sensor, both have a “kick-stand”, both have a 3.5mm headphone jack………

Even the price is similar, with both on sale at around RM1800.

I can go on and on… But instead, I’ll go on with my comparison:

DESIGN:

On the front, both mobiles provide a clean, minimalist hassle-free design. With the slide closed, all you see is the big (relatively) 2.6inch screen, with an ambient-light sensor, speaker and video-call camera above, and 6 buttons and a D-pad at the bottom.

With the slides open, the W995 has a more pleasant and harmonious look. I say this because the top and bottom sections looks more like their from the same phone, whereas the N86 looks like its two devices placed on each other.

Hidden away below the screens, both mobiles use elongated-oval shaped keys for the numeric keypad. In terms of user friendliness, both phones have their own pros and cons.

For the buttons below the screen, the buttons on the W995 hurt the finger less as they are flatter and softer, however they have less travel and are not as reassuring as the distinctive “clicks” of the N86’s buttons. I’d also prefer there were more space between the buttons as the N86 has. However, I appreciate that Sony Ericsson has given the W995 a separate button for the centre selection key, unlike the N86. I found myself pressing the “down” key while trying to press “select” key a few times using the N86.

For the numeric keys, both adopt the same shape and size, but there’s more spacing between buttons on the W995 to reduce mistakes while typing. However, the N86’s keypad is more user-friendly because it is raised higher than the relatively flat keys on the W995, making it more intuitive and, once again, more reassuring.

The similarities in design don’t stop there, as both phones feature a Kick-stand.

This makes it easier for the users to use the phone for slideshows or to view videos.

Both Kickstands lift the phone up to roughly 45degrees. However, because the W995’s kickstand is hinged to open to one side of the phone, it tips over easily compared to the N86, where the kickstand is wider (not sure if you can tell from the above photo, but the photo below shows the kickstand that goes around the bottom of the camera lens cover) and supports more of the phone. Also, the N86’s kickstand has a tiny switch which enables it to start an application of choice when it is opened. The W995’s is simply a hinged piece of metal.

On the back is where the similarities in design end. The N86 goes for a plain look, with a design that resembles some digital point-and-shoot cameras. Towards the right, from top to bottom, are the Dual-LED flash (3rd generation), lens and lens cover, and the kickstand going around it.

On the W995, the design is a bit more complicated and weird, at least to me. It’s a shame, as overall the phone’s design was more, erm, interesting and youthful than the N86 (although there’s no doubt the N86 would appeal more to most businessmen). It is as though the designers spent too much time designing the other aspects of the phone, that they simply got lazy as they got to the back. They didn’t attempt to design a nice housing for the camera lens as per other Sony Ericsson phones.

N86:

N86:

W995:

I like the music keys on the W995, because it means you can change tracks or play/stop music anytime at all, whereas on the N86, you have to slide the slider downwards to access the music buttons (will be shown later).

I also like the key-lock switch on the N86, as it makes it easy to lock/unlock the keys if you do not wish to open the slider.

Overall, both phones have equally attractive designs, although the N86 is slightly bigger, and very much heavier, probably because of the aperture and the hardened scratch resistant glass surface. But this weight does give you a sense of quality, feeling like the phone is better built. The W995 is in no way of inferior quality though, with nice metal finish all round.

So far it’s a tie.

SCREEN/DISPLAY:

In the past, there is no competition. Sony Ericsson screens were consistently brighter, sharper than Nokia’s and has much better contrast too. However, times have changed and Nokia has caught up. Sony Ericsson is being “stubborn” as it still sticks 262,144-coloured screens on their mobiles while other brands have long since moved to 16.7million-colour screens. No exception here. The W995 uses a 262,14-colour TFT screen, while the N86 uses a 16.7million-colour Active Matrix Organic LED (AMOLED) screen.

But, even with such difference in technology, it is hard to tell the difference in daylight. It shows how competent Sony Ericsson is in producing a nice screen, with Nokia requiring a 16.7million-colour AMOLED to only be able to match the W995. Worse still, in direct sun, it is almost impossible to see what’s on the N86’s screen, while you can still make out some details on the W995.

In the dark, it’s a whole different story. I did not have a chance to use them together in the dark, so i put here a photo courtesy of 东北网手机频道.

This photo obviously shows the N86’s AMOLED screen being brighter, sharper, with much better contrast compared to the W995.

One more thing I like about the N86 is the auto-rotate function of the screen. This feature is applicable to almost all the functions on the phone, including the stand-by home screen.

On the W995 however, the auto-rotate feature is only available in the media player, for listening to music (with Walkman), viewing photos and watching videos.

Both mobile’s display performed well in the day, with the N86 being handicapped in direct sunlight. However, in not so bright conditions, the N86’s AMOLED advantages become obvious and too much for the W995’s TFT to handle. That, and the fact that the N86 can be used for any function in both landscape and horizontal mode, hands the N86 it’s first victory here.

MUSIC PLAYER:

Something that has become ever so important in mobile phones since the Sony Ericsson W800i Grand-daddy Walkman phone. Plus, more and more people want to listen to music on-the-go, so a music player is very VERY important in mobile phones now. It’s a good thing then that both the N86 and W995 provide very good music players.

The N86 uses the music player standard to Symbian S60 OS, while the W995 uses Walkman 3.0. Both these players have the same library interface, same “now playing” interface, and the same song playing functions (repeat, shuffle, stereo widening…)

Obviously, it is the more matured Walkman 3.0 that has the more attractive interface.

Both mobiles have dedicated music buttons. The N86’s are hidden under the slide below the speaker (requiring you to slide the phone downwards) and doubles as gaming keys for N-Gage, zoom keys for photos and web browsing; the W995’s on the right.

Personally I prefer the W995’s buttons because, as I mentioned before, they are easy to access. This means you can change songs and play/stop songs anytime anywhere while doing anything, while on the N86 you have to slide the slider downwards. This is especially annoying if you’re typing a message or an email and decide you don’t like the song you’re listening to.

One thing the N86 has that the W995 doesn’t, however, is an FM Transmitter. This means that you can send the songs in your phone to any stereo, or indeed surround sound system, through FM signals and listen to the songs in full stereo or surround glory.

Both mobiles have stereo speakers (N86’s on the left and right of the right side of the phone; W995’s on the top and bottom of the phone) and has above average quality. Both speakers can get pretty loud without shrieking, which is very good in loud conditions (such as in the canteen where I did the loudness test). Plus, they both provide quite nice stereo sound when viewing slideshows or videos using the kick-stand. I still think that no mobile phone out there could match the speakers of the old Nokia 5700 XpressMusic though…

Both provide a convenient 3.5mm jack (which I appreciate very much!) and both provide extremely amazing sound quality if (the equalizer) is adjusted right. I didn’t like the Mega-Bass in the W995 though, because I think it has TOO much bass.

In this sector, with Sony Ericsson being the “daddy” of music phones, the W995 inches out slightly over the N86, with a more attractive interface and better position of the music keys.

It’s all tied up again!

CAMERA:

Both mobiles use 8 megapixel lenses (W995 having 0.1 megapixels extra), but that’s the only similarity.

W995’s camera lens is standard Sony Ericsson hardware with autofocus, coupled with a single LED lens. I’m not sure why Sony Ericsson has decided NOT to give it a simple lens cover, leaving the lens bare, welcoming fingerprints, dust and ultimately, scratches.

The N86 triumphs over the W995 in both hardware and design. The Nokia is short of 0.1megapixels, but fights back HARD with Carl Zeiss optics, 28mm wide angle lens, variable aperture and a mechanical shutter. The mechanical shutter can be seen in the following photos:

In terms of camera interface, the W995 once again inches ahead, having more functions to play with, including “Smile Detection”, a function in particular which I like.

The N86, with the updated version 20.115 software, now includes face-detection, thus closing the gap in terms of camera functions.

But, the most important thing is the result. Which camera performs better?

Let the photos speak for themselves. The photos below are comparisons taken with each phone at exactly the same time. N86 left, W995 right.

Outdoor, bright sunlight:

The N86, with its variable aperture, is able to limit the light (there’s a lot of light in this typical Malaysian sunny weather!) that enters the lens, and thus takes a more neutral photo. Of course brightness of the W995 can be changed, but it wouldn’t be as natural as the N86.

Outdoor, relatively lower lighting:

Once again, the N86’s variable aperture manages to provide a nicer, more neutral photo. The updated software 20.115 on the Nokia with improved sensors also gives a closer hue of green to the real thing. This is a big improvement as Nokias of past are generally insensitive to green somehow.

Also, notice how the N86’s wide angle lens is able to capture more of the surrounding. Both photos are aligned to start on the 7th square of the window grill, but the N86 is able to capture the girl past the pillar, whereas the W995 only manages half the pillar.

Indoors, bright light:

I don’t think I need to explain again, do I? It’s a shame how the W995’s sensor is unable to regulate the brightness. N86’s wide angle lens is more apparent here.

Indoors, enclosed area (inside escalator):

This test is supposed to test the brightness of the Dual- and Single-LED flashes. But the condition wasn’t dark enough to clearly see the difference. However if you look at the hair of the boys in dark blue and red, you realise the N86 picks up more details than the W995. Also, the mechanical shutter of the N86 is able to capture boy in purple, whereas the W995 only captures a blurred motion.

Semi-outdoor, unbalanced brightness:

In such conditions, virtually NO mobile phone cameras could manage the lighting conditions (dark on one side, bright on the other). That’s why the N86 shocked me. It was able to handle the light quite well, producing an acceptable photo. The W995’s photo is over-exposed on one side.

Indoors, bright condition, close-up:

Both camera could focus on close objects with NO problems, however the aperture in the N86 allowed more light in, producing a sharper image. Wide angle lens also obvious here.

The reason Nokia took so long to finally introduce an 8 megapixel phone, as they said, was to fine tune the 8mp camera lens. And it shows. The N86 with variable aperture and wide angle Carl Zeiss lens really makes the N86 an extremely amazing (sometimes shockingly amazing) photography phone, and it is no gimmick. Those features actually make the N86 camera exceptionally good. In fact, I’d go as far to say that the N86 is the first camera phone that could actually match stand-alone digicams out there (it certainly made a fool out of the Sony CyberShot T20 I used to take photos of the phones).

The W995 being a ‘Music phone’ really shows. It triumphed over the N86 in the music department (not by much though) and gave the N86 an easy win in the camera department.

Nokia 2, Sony Ericsson 1.

Software:

Nokia uses Symbian S60, Sony Ericsson uses Sony Ericsson OS. Enough said. Although some people might whine that the Symbian is too complicated to use (like I once did), but the fact remains that the Symbian is more powerful, more flexible and versatile, allows for more applications to be installed, more matured, has better follow-up services (software updates by Symbian), and more organized.

The Sony Ericsson OS used in the W995 dates back to Sony Ericssons of old, namely since the Sony Ericsson T610. Although it has been changed and updated a bit here and there, it’s still same overall, giving people the “used one, used all” feeling. But one undeniable thing about Sony Ericsson OS is that it is unmistakably user-friendly.

So once again, N86 beats the W995.

Three strikes, you’re out.

Conclusion:

Based on my opinion, the Nokia N86 8MP is the better phone. However let me be clear, although I wrote that the score is 3-1 to the Nokia, it is not as obvious as it looks. The differences between these phones are truly minute, and it all depends on the person who wants to make the choice. I’ve used both and trust me, making a choice between the two on where to spend your RM1800, was not easy.

There are nice touches in the W995 that I like and miss a lot on the N86. One such example is the sent message notification and delivery report. On the W995, when sending to multiple contacts, the W995 only notifies you when the message is sent to all contacts, and only shows you one delivery report when all messages are delivered. On the N86 though, it beeps for each message sent, and beeps again for each delivery report. It is such things that make Sony Ericsson such a warm phone to use.

Different people have different preference and requirements. For me, personally, I’m quite petty about camera quality, and definitely picky about sound quality, that is why I chose the Nokia N86 8MP as the phone I allow to stay with me.

For those who prefer better music interface, a more youthful design, a lighter device, and a more hassle-free user-friendly OS (OS is operating system, btw), surely the Sony Ericsson would be your choice.

All in all though, I still think the Nokia is the better phone.

I meant to upload this sooner...

but halfway through uploading the tons of photos ..

The internet decided to suck all of a sudden..... and uploading was impossible...

Me, myself, I, Yung Yang, Huey Xing, Him, Her, Them and Us decided to take a trip to Balik Pulau...

My main aim was to just take a drive through the mountain roads between Balik Pulau and Teluk Bahang.... damn relaxing..

a great way to take my mind off things.. Try it!

Our Journey started from Dato Keramat, the home of Huey Xing, Her and Them...

We went to Air Itam to get to Dragon Tail to go up the Dragon Tail Hill...

when we reached the strange Y-shaped junction... of course we turned right up into Balik Pulau....

What I Like about Donald Trump

In case you didn't know, THIS is Donald Trump..

Honestly, I like this guy... and there's a good reason why I like him...

He's successful!.. one of the most successful businessman the world has ever seen...

...but that's not the reason...

He's rich!.. one of the richest person alive...

...but again that's not the reason...

He's Proud!!.. extremely proud!!....

....in fact he's almost narcissistic..

In an inverview, he says, and I quote,..

"...the reason The Apprentice is so successful is because I'm in it..."

he then goes on to say

"...everything that I'm involved in is successful..."

[at least.. that's what I think I remember he said..]

but none of the above is the reason I like him...

I like Donald Trump
[wont his name sound nicer with "sir"? "Sir Donald Trump".. nice]

because He is NoT ashamed of being Proud!

how many people in this world can actually tell people, in an internationally televised interview, that "...everything I do is successful..."?

i know i don't...

I was doing nothing...

well that's not true........

I was browsing through useless and irrelevant videos on YouTube..

and I came accross two extremely un-useless and in-irrelevant videos..
[in other words.. useful and relevant..]

I'm going to share it with you... hope this serves as a wake up call for Everyone!
